A three-year-old boy climbed over a barrier and fell into Harambe's enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo. For about ten minutes, Harambe interacted with the child — at times appearing protective, dragging him through the water of the moat.

Zoo officials made the agonizing decision to shoot Harambe, fearing for the child's life. A tranquilizer, they said, would have taken too long and could have agitated him further.

Harambe was killed instantly. The child survived with minor injuries.
